Capitol City: Not a lot of free

Day 172
Tallahassee FL

All the effort put into finding a place near the city would be wasted if we didn't get out and see it. Leaving our campsite took a bit longer than it should have. The pricks next door ran their generator until past midnight and I just couldn't sleep. The RV was hot and we didn't have hookups to run the A/C. Tossing and turning through the humidity puts me in a great mood to go see the capitol city. We both rush out and and try to see the landscape with a sense of urgency. We need to get through some stuff and get back to the RV before it's too hot for the animals to be inside.

The city capitol building was closed on the weekend. We typically try to swing in and get a sense of the place. Looks like that won't be the case here. Within the same compound lies the old capitol building. It's free, so we go see.

A clean building restored in the 1970's had a few things on display. It was nice, but nothing to get excited about. Katie glimpses at her list of free stuff and there is a Florida State Museum two blocks down the street. We walk over and try to find the entrance. An arrow outside points down a staircase, and into a weird covered patio that goes into an unmarked glass door. There we step into the museum and start power walking through it.

My favorite exhibit of the museum was a small collection of cars. One of the cool things was a Baker Electric. This is a car that was battery powered in 1911. Very few people know that in 1900 28% of the cars on the road were electric. Pictured below is a battery charger from back in the day. Looks sketchy at best.

An hour passes and the the museum time is up. We march back to the Jeep and power down some quick lunch. Down the road is the oldest cemetery in Tallahassee. It was a place where all people from all walks of life shared a common space. Rich and poor, black and white, this cemetery was breaking boundaries in the 1800's well ahead of its time.

Time in Tallahassee has come to an end. We head back to the campsite and spend the rest of the afternoon sitting out in the heat with the dog. Day turns to night, and the pricks next door start up the generator again. This time it will run some power tools as they work on some crap cars in the driveway. I can't wait to leave this terrible county campground.
