Coe Landing Campgound: Cheap Crap Camping

Day 171
Tallahasee FL

Looking for some affordable camping outside of Tallahassee was no easy task. The best place I could find was a county ran campground that was still a 30 minute drive into town. A couple of phone calls lead me to "Rick". This guy oversees one of the campgrounds just down the road and was able to give us some direction on how to stay here. The county website said we had to book two weeks in advance (which is total crap). Rick let us know we could swing in and find an open spot. Open your wallet and drop $11.25 a night into the self pay box was all that was needed. The phone call wasn't without a little warning. "How big are you?" asked the man with a think southern accent. "We're 32 feet of Class A motorhome" I responded. A bit of silence. That's never a good sign. "Well I suppose you should fit. Depends on how good of a driver you are".

Challenge accepted.

Penny swung in and it wasn't too bad at all. The park has 9 sites, the first 5 all slope downhill at a steep angle. There would be no way to sleep level without a floor jack and a few 4x4's. Sites 6-9 were a lot better, and we settled on spot number 7. Next to us was some disgusting work truck and a tent that was set up underneath a bunch of tarps. They had obviously been here a while. Not wanting to judge too quickly we took Eli for a walk straight past the campground host trailer. A picture perfect example of how the rest of this place looked. Cluttered with trash and unkept. It was worse in person. The table and chairs were broken. A window unit hung out of the back of the RV, and the fence around the bathrooms had a tattered tarp covering a pile of trash.

Regardless of the crap trailer host the lake was a nice place to sit. Murky waters kept us from getting into the kayaks again. Our neighbor had told us there are gators here swimming around eating the leftover bits from fisherman cleaning their catch.

A quick check with the dog confirms my conclusion. This will be alright.

Back at the RV we get out our chairs and sit back to enjoy the rest of the day. It's a warm and cloudy afternoon with no breeze to speak of. We both sweat in our chairs and just can't bother being inside. Penny is almost 85 degrees and we don't have electric to cool her down. Eli stirs from his spot and crawls under the RV. Katie pulls him out and investigates. Looks like a little turtle came to hide in the shade. Let's hope this is the biggest critter we run into down here.
