Freeport: Free Parking

Day 273
Hingham MA- Freeport ME

A long drive out of Massachusetts took us straight through New Hampshire and into Maine. The first stop was a Cabela's on the outskirts of Portland. Instead of a being a quiet place to park it was buzzing with semis. Unfortunately they let big rigs park at some of their stores and it turns them into truck stops. Stop number two on the list of possibilities was a public parking lot in the town of Freeport. A small community of 8,000 people where someone decided it would be OK to let random people sleep in the middle of the shopping district or free.

Quaint. Cute. Subtle yet impressive. A walk down the streets shows us that this town is a nice place to live. I pop open Zillow and start looking at houses for sale. The cheapest one I can find is $400,000. Only a few others are for sale and they are all close to the million dollar mark.

We get back from the walk and Katie decides to go for a run. I'll stick around the RV with Eli and catch up on not doing anything at all. Today was 6 hours of driving. It would have been less but we opted to leave the highway and take the state roads to avoid $30 worth of tolls. I'm not sure if it was worth it. Steep grades combined with lots of towns made for a long commute.

Some info searching on the town shows us a little more about this place. It is the home and headquarters to L.L. Bean. They have an anchor store across the street accompanied by a small outlet section of other stores. Not Dollar General or Five Below, but Coach, Oakley, and Old Navy line the walkway. It's a nice enough town that they made the street curbs out of granite. They don't want to be that crappy village known for it's derelict concrete. My oh my, things we see on the road.
